Wilhelm Wagenfeld, 1930
In 1930, Wilhelm Wagenfeld designed a lamp intended for a variety of uses. A brochure published by Weimar Bau- und Wohnungskunst GmbH described it simply as a “bedside lamp, also suitable as a wall lamp.” Yet the WNL 30 can do much more: it provides focused light beside a bed, above a shelf, next to a mirror or for reading – and also makes an excellent piano lamp.
The design dates from Wagenfeld’s years in Weimar. Following his studies at the Bauhaus, he became head of the metal workshop at the State Academy of Architecture and devoted himself intensively to designing objects for everyday life. The WNL 30 embodies this approach to this day: clear in form, carefully considered in every detail and remarkably versatile.
Two joints allow the lamp head to be positioned precisely, while the light is directed to one side. The solid brass body is nickel-plated rather than chrome-plated, giving the surface a warmer appearance and a particularly deep lustre. An opal glass diffuser and the discreet rotary switch beneath the shade complete the functional design.

Each lamp is individually numbered and bears the TECNOLUMEN signet.

Wilhelm Wagenfeld was a German industrial designer whose works are still admired today for their timeless aesthetics and functional clarity. As a key figure of the Bauhaus movement and a pioneer of modern industrial design, he left behind a vast body of work that has enriched the everyday lives of many people.
